Civil War Paper

June 28th
Dear diary,
Today was a awful day out working in the field picking out all the branches and leaves out of the cotton. We thought of a new song to sing, that is me and my “friends” the song is called “Wade in the Water”. We made the song so that we will be able to express our feelings without our overseers knowing. Most of the time when Esmeralda comes into work late she gets punished and she says “God please don’t trouble the water no more.” Which is in a part of our new song.
Another song is called “Follow the Drinking Gourd”. This song helps the people that have escaped find their way to the Underground Railroad, or to homes that are safe to be in. There was a man he was very nice and his name was Peg Leg Joe. He is the one that taught us this song. He has been going around to plantations all over the world to help the slaves be free.

Dear diary,
My overseer has just whipped me many times for singing a song that I thought would be a good song to sing. Most of the times he is nice, but today he is in a bad mood. The song of the day today is called “Steal Away”, this song is about Nat. Nat is a guy that organized a slave riot against the slave owners. Nat was a hero to many people in the world. He saved many people that were slaves.
Overall my life was pretty bad, until I became a free woman. You only get freed when your slave owner dies, which is what has happened to me. I was blessed with a miracle. Thank you god.
