Harrison Bergeron

6:50 PM

Imagine living in a world having to deal with being the same as everyone else. Wouldn’t that be boring and dull? In the story “Harrison Bergeron” there were many horrific things that happen. This story is a irony with many aspects that I don’t agree with.

Living in a world having to be the same as everyone else is not right. If your beautiful you have to wear a ugly mask. I don’t agree with this part of the story; why does everyone have to be the same? There is no reason for that. This is the only part of the short story that I don’t not like; what is wrong with the person that wrote this? Many people don’t think that anyone who is beautiful should have to wear a mask; if your pretty you should be able to show people that you are! This part of the short story it makes me so angry; being the same is not always a good thing. So that they can be "equal"; well being the same doesn’t matter, everyone has there own special thing that they are good at. Each and every person is good at something different if someone is born with a gift you don’t take that away from him/her so that they can be equal. Another thing is that the people that are smart have to have a loud noise go into there heads. Well that is not right either, people with the ability to be smart should be able to show the world how smart they are.

Many aspects of the short story have to do with being the same, but not the plot line. Ironies are stories that start in chaos. The world that these poor families live in, always have to be the same. Then after that happens the main character struggles for life. When this happens Harrison is being shot by Diana. Then it ends in death or death symbolism. In the ending of the short story "Harrison Bergeron" there is a tragic death of the son. Harrison dies, because he gets shot by Diana Moon Glampers. Which means that the ending of the story is death. The short story "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut is also unrealistic no person on Earth would ever want everyone to be the same as anyone else; and if the would then they are crazy.

Although the short story was a unrealistic irony with many intriguing symbols it is a good story. I don’t agree with most of this short story because of all the horrible arguing. No one would ever want to live in a world where you have to be the same. Living in a world, being the same is not right; everyone has there own taste, own style and own looks.

Dead Man's Path

Imagine living in a world knowing that you could see your loved ones that have passed away every day. What if someone shut down that opportunity? I know for a fact that I would fight to see my loved ones. Well that is what happened in the story “Dead Man’s Path”. Obi was the one that closed the path to the road taking away a opportunity. This story is a tragedy with many symbols.

Living in a world of hatred is not easy, but living in a world of happiness is the whole package. Knowing a life with a road that took you to your loved ones would make you happy, but imagine losing that chance. Wouldn’t that be horrible? Well in the short story “Dead Man’s Path” that is exactly what happens. Obi the main director of the school decides that it is a good idea to close this road because there are too many people that go there. After he closes “the path” people start to get angry, but wouldn’t you? Obi is terrified at what happens after the path is closed. People start to come up to the school and tear down everything, including the school.

There are many horrific things that happen in this short story to make it a tragedy. Having a school with a path to the dead was probably not a good idea. First there is a rise to power, the rise to power was when Obi gets the promotion and puts up the fence. Then all of the people that are in the town are furious with Obi. The next day a person goes into labor and has died while giving birth. Many of the people in the town think that it is because the path is closed. I believe that the spirit of the baby was supposed to come from where the fence was so then the baby and the mother died. After the death of that woman, people start to think that it is because of the path so they get furious and go up to the school. In the night they take different items and tear down the fence and the school. Therefore that makes Obi think twice about this situation, but still doesn’t get what he did wrong. The tragic fall was the fence getting tore down. The death or death symbolism was when the woman and he baby died.

“Dead Man’s Path” is a tragedy with many symbols. Living during that time probably was hard, but the people of the town got through it. Obi didn’t get that every person in life needs a path to walk on; and a place to go in the future. All Obi wanted was to help, but in all reality he didn’t help much; he just hurt people even more.
